Photobiomodulation Therapy

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to improve the health of eye cells. Unlike laser surgery, which uses heat to create a seal, PBM uses low-level light to stimulate the cells in the retina. This process helps the cells produce more energy and repair themselves. At RVSU, our specialists use this advanced technology to support patients with certain types of macular conditions, helping to maintain vision and slow the signs of aging in the eye.

Our fellowship-trained physicians are at the forefront of retinal care. By using PBM therapy, we can offer a gentle, light-based option for patients looking to protect their central vision. This treatment is painless, fast, and does not require any injections or surgery.

Cell Energy Boost

PBM therapy helps the mitochondria (the powerhouses of the cell) create more energy to keep the retina functioning well.

Non-Invasive Care

There are no needles, no surgery, and no downtime. Patients can go right back to their normal day after a session.

Evidence-Based Results

Clinical studies show that specific light wavelengths can reduce swelling and improve the health of the retinal layers.

PBM Therapy

When is PBM Therapy Recommended?

A retina specialist may suggest PBM therapy for patients with specific needs, particularly those involving the health of the macula:

  • Dry Macular Degeneration: To help improve the health of retinal cells and potentially slow the growth of “drusen” (yellow deposits).
  • Macular Edema: To help the eye absorb excess fluid and reduce swelling in the center of your vision.
  • Cellular Stress: To support the retina when it is struggling to clear out waste products due to aging or disease.
  • Visual Clarity Issues: To help patients who feel their vision is becoming dim or less sharp over time.
  • Inflammation Control: To reduce the low-level inflammation that can damage the delicate tissues at the back of the eye.

How Light Therapy Heals the Eye

PBM therapy works on a tiny, cellular level. The light used in this treatment is usually in the red or near-infrared range. These specific colors of light can pass through the eye and reach the retina. Once there, the light is absorbed by the cells. This absorption triggers a positive chemical reaction that increases blood flow and reduces cell death. Think of it like “charging the battery” of your eye cells. When the cells have more energy, they can better protect themselves from damage and keep your vision clear for a longer period.

The Treatment Process

Managing retinal health is an ongoing process. If you have been told you have early signs of macular degeneration, PBM therapy may be a helpful addition to your care plan.

01

Professional Screening

We perform a complete exam to see if your specific eye condition will respond well to light therapy.

02

The Therapy Session

You will sit comfortably in front of a specialized PBM device. You will look at a gentle light for several minutes while the machine delivers the exact amount of energy needed.

03

No Numbing Required

Because the light is low-level and does not create heat, the procedure is completely painless. You will not need any numbing drops or injections.

04

Immediate Return to Activity

Your vision will not be blurred by the treatment. You can drive yourself home and continue your day without any restrictions.

What to Expect During Recovery

There is no “recovery time” for PBM therapy. Most patients feel fine immediately after their session. Some people notice their vision feels slightly brighter or clearer after several treatments. Because PBM works by improving cell health over time, it is usually done as a series of short sessions over a few weeks. Your specialist will track your progress using high-resolution scans to see how your retina is responding to the light energy.
