Emergency Retina Care Quick Help to Protect Your Vision

The retina is a thin layer at the back of your eye that works like a camera. It needs a steady supply of blood to stay healthy. If you have a retinal detachment or a tear, it is a serious medical emergency. This can cause you to lose your sight very fast. At RVSU, we make emergency cases a priority. We want you to see an expert eye doctor as soon as possible to protect your vision.

We offer advanced retinal detachment treatment at our offices in Utah. This means you can get specialized help from a surgeon without needing to go to a busy hospital emergency room.

Recognizing Warning Signs

Recognizing Warning Signs

Our specialists want you to call us immediately if you notice any of these signs of a retinal tear:

  • New Eye Floaters: Seeing a lot of new dark specks, clouds, or cobwebs moving in your vision.
  • Flashes of Light: Seeing bright streaks or lightning flashes, especially on the sides of your eyes.
  • A Dark Curtain: Seeing a shadow or a dark veil move across your field of sight.
  • Sudden Blurry Vision: A fast change in how clear you see or seeing lines that look wavy.
  • Eye Trauma: Any hard hit or injury to the eye area needs to be checked by a professional.

How We Fix and Protect Your Eyes

In most emergencies, the goal is to put the retina back in place. For a simple tear, we might use a special laser to seal the area. This is often called laser photocoagulation. For more serious problems, our surgeons use advanced methods to move the retina back where it belongs. This may include using a small gas bubble or a special band to support the eye. By making your eye a priority, we can often stop vision loss from getting worse. Our main goal is to keep your eyes stable and help you get back to your normal life. We use the latest medical techniques to give you the best chance of keeping your sight.

Your Emergency Care Process

When you come in for emergency care, we follow these four steps:

01

Quick Check
We look at your symptoms and check your eye pressure to understand the problem.

02

Eye Drops
We use special drops to make your pupils very wide. This lets our doctors see the whole back of your eye.

03

Picture Scans
We use high-tech cameras to look at the layers of your retina. This helps us see exactly where the problem is.

04

Fast Treatment
If you need a laser or a small procedure, we can often start your treatment right then in our office.

Post-Treatment Recovery

After your emergency care, your eye needs time to rest. It is normal if your eye feels a little scratchy or looks red for a short time. We will give you simple rules to follow, such as not lifting heavy things for a few days. Depending on your treatment, you might also need to keep your head in a certain position. This helps the eye stay stable while it heals. It is very important to come back for your checkup visits. These visits let us make sure your eye is healing correctly and your vision is as safe as possible.
